“It’s him! It’s really him!” She said excitedly to her friends as they saw the high stakes game playing in the back of the room.
She gathered her friends who had been waiting to play $2/$5 Texas Hold ’Em. They had finally been told they had a seat when they walked by the table where they spotted him. Bruce Wayne, the city’s most eligible bachelor, billionaire playboy, and poker player. As they gathered near the table to try and catch a glimpse of their hero playing poker, Bruce noticed and stood up.
“Look! He is coming this way!” said one of the friends.
One of the girls quickly pulled out her phone and asked if they could take a picture. Bruce obliged and posed with them as they each took turns to take a picture with him. They began to pepper Bruce with questions. Some questions about poker and some about life. As the conversation ended one of the girls looked back at him and yelled, “I’ll wait here all night for you Bruce!”
The rest of the night went relatively quiet for a poker room. A couple of the friends from the group quit the game they were in, but they stayed waiting near the poker room for a chance to see Bruce Wayne again. Occasionally, one of them would go back into the poker room to talk with their friend or come out of the poker room. Hours had ticked away, the poker room emptied out as players began to rack up their chips and leave. There was only one friend from the group still playing poker. The others were patiently waiting for Mr. Bruce Wayne to finish playing. Hoping that they would get another chance to speak to him.
Finally in the wee hours of the morning, the game that Bruce Wayne was playing in, broke. The group of friends watched excitedly in hopes that he would see them. They wanted to be respectful and did not intrude into his space. As he finished racking up his chips, he came to the front of the room to find that his adoring fans were still there waiting for him. They asked for more pictures and began discussing poker. As the conversation went on, one of the friends looked suddenly at Bruce Wayne as if he were small child asking Santa Claus for gift and asked, “Hey, would you play $2/$5 with us?” Bruce paused for a second, looked at us, the floor supervisors, then back at the friend group who were now all looking at him with hope, and then looked back at us and asked, “Is that possible?” “Is there an available seat where I can join them to play?”
Without any hesitation, we assured Bruce Wayne that we could accommodate him so he could play with his adoring fans. The friend group became visibly excited at the opportunity to play poker with their hero. Bruce said he would be right back and went to where he had been playing to retrieve his chips. While he was gone, the friends realized that not all of them would be able to play with him. Of the four friends that were present, only one of them was playing poker. They quickly turned back to us and asked if there was an available seat. Luckily for them we did have seats available, but not for everyone to join. As they discussed their options another seat opened at the table. We informed them of the change and presented them with an option. The fourth friend would wait nearby and take seat as soon as it became available.
After a while, Bruce came up behind me and said, “OK, I’m ready. Where am I going to play?” I walked Bruce over to the $2/$5 table where the group of friends were all playing. As he took his seat I noticed he did not have any chips. I asked if he needed any chips. He confirmed that he did and then looked around at the table and asked what the buy-in was. I informed him what the max buy in was for the game and he handed me a couple of $1000 chips to color down for him.
My shift had come to an end. As I walked out of the poker room, I could hear the laughter and joyful conversation coming from Bruce’s table. The poker they played was fun. Bruce Wayne truly is a poker player of the people.
